During the first three days of the Town of Vernon’s new school bus safety program, there were nearly 100 potential violations of state law.

Vernon police are reviewing video captured by the five cameras mounted on each of Vernon’s 37 school buses. Motorists the officers find violated the law will receive a warning letter in the mail.

Beginning Sept. 28, motorists who pass Vernon school buses picking up or discharging students with the red lights flashing and the stop arm extended face a $250 fine.

Nearly 100 violations during the first three days of school highlight the need for the school bus safety program, which was launched this year in partnership with BusPatrol.

For the first 30 days of the program, violators will receive a warning letter. Once the warning period ends, violators face a $250 fine.
