The mayor’s summer concert series kicks off this Thursday, July 30 at 6:30 p.m. with a performance by Rockville’s own 102d Army band.

The musicians based at the armory on West Road serve with the Connecticut Army National Guard and perform a wide variety of music. The musicians make up several performance groups, including a jazz combo, rock band, pop ensemble and brass quintet.

The concert scheduled for Thursday will feature classical music and military marches, said Staff Sgt. Michael Cavuoto, a clarinetist with the 102nd Army Band.

The concert follows the Vernon Farmers Market. Both the concert and farmers market are planned for Henry Park. In the event of rain, both events will be moved to Rockville High School.

Before the music begins, there will be a special ceremony to mark the Town of Vernon’s participation in the U.S. Army’s Partnership for Your Success program, which is designed to prepare, train and connect soldiers to future employers, both in the public and private sectors. PaYS program partners guarantee soldiers an interview and possible employment, while gaining access to a pool of high skilled, motivated and professional candidates.

Mayor Dan Champagne, a Connecticut Army National Guard veteran, said soldiers leave the army with a variety of skills and experiences that translate well to the work world.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the Town of Vernon,” Mayor Champagne said. “Veterans bring a lot to the table and have a strong record of work and achievement. That translates extremely well into the public service jobs we have available in Vernon.”
