Vernon’s annual leaf collection program begins Monday, Nov. 3 and will continue through December as weather permits. Residents have three options to dispose of leaves.
Curbside leaf collection.
Taking leaves to a leaf collection area.
Bagged leaf collection the first two Fridays in December.
During leaf collection, weekly bulky waste collection is suspended.
Curbside collection
All streets are guaranteed at least one pass by collection crews. If time and weather permit, crews will make a second pass through town, although a second pass is not guaranteed. Crews will place signs in neighborhoods to alert residents when leaf collection is approaching.
To determine where you are on the leaf collection schedule, check the street listing. (The street list was revised this year.) Streets in Group A will be collected first, followed by Group B and then Group C. Leaf collection is dependent on the weather. Good weather means crews can complete a section in about two weeks. Rain, snow or freezing temperatures delay collection.
Leaves should be raked to the curb, but not into the street or over sidewalks. Raking leaves into the street or onto the sidewalk creates safety and flooding hazards and violates town ordinance and punishable by a $100 fine.
Take leaves to a collection area
You can also dispose of leaves by bagging them and taking them to one of three leaf collection areas.
The Nye Street firehouse (off West Street)
The Church Street lot near the rail trail parking lot.
Legion Field off Regan Road at the rear of the parking lot.
Leaf collection areas are for leaves only. Dumping grass clippings, branches, garden waste or brush is not permitted. Leaf bins will be closed if inappropriate items are dumped. Leaves in biodegradable leaf bags can be left as is. If you bring leaves in plastic bags, the leaves must be dumped from the bags.
Bagged leaf collection the first two Fridays in December
Collection of bagged leaves takes place on the first two Fridays of December, but may be impacted by weather. You must call the Department of Public Works at 860-870-3500 to schedule pickup. Only leaves bagged in paper bags will be collected.
Please note that bagged leaves will not be collected with regular household refuse.
