Mayor and Krajewski family

A huge crowd turned out at Henry Park Tuesday evening to honor Stephen E. “Krash” Krajewski and to see the park’s softball field named in his honor.

Krajewski was a longtime a Vernon Parks and Recreation Department employee and hall of fame athlete at Rockville High School and Eastern Connecticut State University. During his career he played an integral role in organizing softball leagues and other sports activities for children and adults in Vernon.

“When I was approached to name the field after Steve, it was an easy decision,” Vernon Mayor Dan Champagne said at Tuesday’s event. “He was sports in town. He was a great guy.”

Mayor Champagne also acknowledged the Town Council members who voted in favor of naming the field after Krajewski and who attended Tuesday evening’s event.

A huge crowd turned out for Tuesday's naming of the Henry Park softball field in honor of Steve "Krash" Krajewski.

Joining Mayor Champagne at the event were Krajewski’s wife Danielle and daughters Meagan and Taylor. In addition to the mayor, representatives of the leagues that worked with Steve spoke in his honor.

“Steve’s fingerprints are all over this town,” Danielle told the crowd gathered at the field Tuesday night to honor him. “His comradery, sportsmanship and leadership has bound him to these fields and gyms of Vernon.”

Steven played on the fields at Henry Park and created the leagues that continue to use them, Danielle said.

“Honoring and dedicating this field to him was a perfect choice,” she said.

Danielle and her daughters then pulled the covering from the sign for the field.

Also Tuesday, a bench honoring Krajewski was uncovered. It sits near the McCoy baseball field, next to a bench named in honor of Krajewski’s father.
