Vernon’s curbside fall leaf collection begins Nov. 4

Fall curbside leaf collection begins on Monday, Nov. 4 and continues through December, weather permitting.

The town is divided into three sections and Vernon Public Works crews will work their way through each section before moving on to the next. Signs will be placed to let residents know when leaf collection is approaching.

Streets in Group A will be collected first, followed by Groups B and C.

Leaves should be raked to the curb (but NOT into the street or sidewalk) by the collection date. Raking leaves into the street or onto the sidewalk creates a safety and flooding hazard and is a violation of Town Ordinance No. 235, Sec. 7-20 and is punishable by a $100 fine.

Leaf collection is weather-dependent. If weather remains good, crews can complete a group of streets in one to two weeks. Rain, snow or freezing temperatures will delay collection. All streets are guaranteed at least one pass. If time permits, DPW crews will make a second pass.

Another option is to take leaves to one of three disposal areas. If leaves are in biodegradable paper bags, they can be placed in the collection area. Leaves must be dumped from plastic bags and anything other than paper lawn bags. Plastic bags can be disposed of in refuse cans at each collection area. The leaf collection areas are:

• the Nye Street Firehouse (off West Street)
• the Church Street parking lot
• Legion Field (off Regan Road at rear of parking lot)

Deposit only leaves. No grass clippings, branches, garden waste or brush are permitted. Contamination caused by disposal of any other type of yard waste, household waste or bulky items will result in the leaf bin being shut down.

Curbside collection of leaves bagged in biodegradable paper bags is planned for the first two Fridays in December, but may be impacted by inclement weather. Call the Public Works Office at 860-870-3500 to schedule pickup.

Bagged leaves cannot be put out for collection with regular trash.
