Vernon Voters Can Drop Off Items for Pet Pantry and New Socks for ‘Socktober’ at Voting Places
Vernon residents who would like to make a donation to the new Vernon Pet Pantry or to the annual Socktober program that collects new socks and underwear for clients of Vernon’s Cornerstone Shelter can now do so when they go to vote.
Collection boxes will be at each voting location on Election Day, Tuesday Nov. 5, but will not be in the rooms where people actually cast their ballots.
The Hockanum Valley Community Council is a partner of the new Vernon Pet Pantry.
The pet pantry’s goal is to ease the pressure on people who may be experiencing hardship, to ensure they can properly care for their pets, and to reduce the possibility that pets will be abandoned, said Lisa Moody, a Vernon resident and one of the people behind organizing the pet pantry. Wet and dry dog and cat food is especially welcome.
The annual Socktober appeal was started several years ago by Tommy Glinski, who is now a student at Rockville High School, and has collected thousands of pairs of new socks for Cornerstone.
New socks and underwear collected will go to Cornerstone’s clothing bank. While second-hand shirts, pants, jackets and other garments are great for clothing bank clients, socks and underwear are a little more personal and Cornerstone tries to provide the people it helps with brand new socks and underwear.
Donations are optional and are not required to participate in the voting process.
