Trash and Recycling Collection

Curbside pickup begins at 6 a.m. year-round Monday through Friday. Carts must be placed at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on collection day and no more than 24 hours in advance.

Automated routes utilize the tan carts that are either 96 gallons or 64 gallons in capacity. Trash should be bagged and placed in carts. Recyclables should NOT be bagged. Items on or around carts will not be collected. Carts should be placed at the curb with the wheels pointing away from the street and at least 3 feet away from another cart, utility pole, mailbox, etc.

Additional refuse and recycling carts can be purchased for $95 each.  Mail a check payable to the Town of Vernon to the Public Works Department, 375 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon, CT  06066.  Don’t forget to include your contact information including:  phone number, address where the cart is to be delivered and which cart you wish to purchase, refuse or recycling. 

Here is what can be recycled

  • Paperboard boxes, such as cereal boxes

  • Opened mail and greeting cards

  • Loose metal jar lids and steel bottle caps

  • Paper egg cartons

  • Rinsed No. 1-7 plastic tubs and screw top jars, EXCEPT black plastic takeout containers.

  • Rinsed plastic bottles and jugs

  • Paperback books

  • File folders

  • Phone books

  • White and colored office paper

  • Rinsed, clean and balled aluminum foil and pie pans

  • Rinsed glass bottles and jars

  • Empty aerosol cans

  • Magazines, brochures and catalogs

  • Newspaper and inserts

  • Corrugated cardboard - please break up boxes to save space in your cart

  • Paper bags

  • Rinsed cans

  • Rinsed paper milk and juice cartons

Here is what CANNOT be recycled and should go in the trash

  • Plastic bags

  • Trash

  • Food waste

  • Garbage

UNACCEPTABLE PAPER - Throw in trash

  • Wax paper

  • Soiled paper

  • Soiled napkins

  • Pet food bags

  • Dryer sheets

  • Shredded paper

UNACCEPTABLE PLASTICS - Throw in trash

  • Non-bottle plastics, such as garden hose

  • Any plastic bag

  • Cereal box bags

  • Bubble wrap

  • Clear plastic wrap

  • Potato chip bags

  • Single cheese wrappers

  • Soiled plastic bottles and bags

  • Foam of any sort

  • Coolers

  • Straws

  • Plasticware

  • Toys

  • Black plastic takeout containers

  • Medication bottles

  • Nip bottles or any plastic under 5 inches

UNACCEPTABLE ALUMINUM - Throw in trash

  • Soiled aluminum foil

  • Soiled tin cans

UNACCEPTABLE CARDBOARD - Throw in trash

  • Greasy pizza boxes

  • Cardboard soiled with grease, mold, paint, etc.

UNACCEPTABLE GLASS - Throw in trash

  • Window glass

  • Plated glass

  • Windshield glass

  • Ceramics

  • Candle glass

UNACCEPTABLE MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS - MUST BE DISPOSED OF PROPERLY

  • Electronics - Can be dropped off at transfer station free of charge

  • Clothing items - If useable place in Hartsprings bins at Public Works or transfer station. If not useable, throw in trash.

  • Furniture - If useable, donate to Goodwill or Savers. If not useable, can be disposed of through bulky waste pickup or dropped at the transfer station for a fee.

  • Sheet rock - Can be dropped at transfer station for a fee or disposed of through bulky waste pickup.

  • Wood - Can be dropped at transfer station for a fee or disposed of through bulky waste pickup.

  • Yard waste - Can be taken to transfer station, fees vary.

Not sure if something is recyclable? When in doubt, throw it out.
