January & February Monthly Activities

Exercise Programs: Registration is required for the exercise programs.

  • Chair Yoga – Mondays at 1:00pm - No Class Feb. 20th
  • Seated Volleyball – Mondays, February 6th, 13th, & 27th at 11:00am
  • Cardio Drumming – Tuesdays at 10:00am
  • Tai Chi – Thursdays at 9:30am
  • Strength Class – Thursdays at 12:00pm
  • Balance Class – Fridays at 12:00pm
  • The Fitness Center equipment is available by appointment only. Participants are required to have a doctor’s consent form, signed no longer than a month prior.

Presentations: Free

  • Advanced Directives & Hospice Presentation – Tuesday, February 21st at 11:00am – Deb Orth, from Complete Care Fox Hill, and Julianne Artman, from Trinity Health of New England, will be discussing advanced directives and debunking hospice myths. If you are interested, please call the Center to register.

Reoccurring Monthly Programs: Free

  • The Great Courses – Wednesdays, February 1st, 8th, 15th & 22nd at 10:00am The Great Courses is a series of college-level lectures, given by professors, on a large variety of topics. The Center is offering “The Aging Brain”, presented by Professor Thad A. Polk. Two, thirty-minute lectures will be offered each Wednesday. These lectures are on DVD.
  • Mysteries & “Just Desserts” – Friday, February 3rd at 1:00pm – Are you interested in joining a book club? Do you like mysteries and good company? If you answered yes, then we have the group for you! Our book club meets every month. The books are mysteries with a secondary topic of food.  All participants are responsible for getting their own book. This month’s book is Tea is for Trouble by Karen Sue Walker.
  • Mysteries & “Just Desserts” – Friday, March 3rd at 1:00pm – Sweet Deceit by J.A. Whiting.
  • Film Critics Club – Thursday, February 9th at 1:00pm - A book club, but with movies!  This month’s movie is Extraordinary Measures. The group will view the movie and then have a conversation after.
  • Genealogy Club – Thursday, February 9th at 1:00pm – Alison Watson will be leading the Genealogy Club that takes place monthly. She will be able to help further your ancestry journey. This club is a great place to gather new ideas and get answers to questions that you might have. If you are interested, please call the Center to register.
  • Chorus – Fridays, January 27th, February 10th & 24th at 1:00pm If you are interested, please call the Center to register.
  • Senior Jam Session – Tuesday, February 14th at 2:00pm – What is a jam session you ask? It is an informal activity where musicians make music together, on the instrument that they bring to the gathering. It is a fun way to meet like-minded people and to make music as a group. Come check it out and bring the instrument that you are able to play with you.
  • Bookworms Book Club: Author Suzanne Strempek Shea Visiting the Bookworm’s Book Club – Thursday, February 16th at 10:00am – Suzanne Strempek Shea will be joining our Bookworm’s Book club this month. She is discussing her book Lily of the Valley. Suzanne will be joining us via Zoom at the Center. You don’t need to be a book club member to come. If you are interested, please call the Center to register. All participants are responsible for getting their own book.
  • Poetry Corner – Friday, February 17th at 1:00pm - Calling all poets or poem enthusiasts. Come and enjoy poems written by favorite poets. Or better yet, have you written poetry that you would like to share with others? Well, this is the place. Each month we will learn about one poet and their works. The poet we will be learning about is John Keats.
  • Newcomers Group – Wednesday, February 22nd at 11:00am – If you have recently become a member of the Center, please join us for our Newcomers Group. Come and learn about the different programs and activities we have to offer.
  • Food for Thought – Wednesday, February 22nd at 11:00am – Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. Please Call the Center to register.
  • What’s at the Movies – Wednesday, February 22nd at 1:00pm - The movie is West Side Story (2021/ PG-13/ 2h36m). In the mid-1950s, the young Maria yearns to make a life for herself amidst the hustle and bustle of New York City’s Upper West Side. She quickly catches the eye of Tony, a charming young man of Irish heritage. Despite the warnings from the duo’s traditionalist families, Maria and Tony fall irrevocably in love, pushing the rivalry between their respective gangs to the brink of violence.
  • Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective – The Thames Murders & Other Cases – Friday, February 24th at 1:00pm – Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is a cooperative game, where the players, members of the Baker Street Irregulars, try to solve mysterious cases by walking the streets in search of clues. Unravel the string of intrigues, answer a series of questions, and compare your detective skills to the master sleuth himself, Sherlock Holmes. Can you beat the Master? Each month will be a different case to solve. If you are interested please call the Center to register. Space is limited, due to the game.

Creative Corner: Free unless stated otherwise

  • Crochet & Knitting Class – Mondays at 1:00pm – Are you looking to learn how to knit or crochet? Maybe you are looking to learn how to read a new pattern. Linda can help. Each class is $5, payable to the instructor. No class January 30th.
  • Independent Art – Tuesdays at 1:00pm – If you have a craft project you are working on and would like to be amongst your peers, come and join our fun, artistic, and welcoming group. Bring your own supplies.
  • Crochet & Knitting – Wednesdays at 10:00am – This program is open to those that like to knit or crochet with like-minded individuals.
  • Zen-tangle – Friday, February 10th at 1:00pm - This program teaches how to turn doodles into art.
  • Cards with Beth – Monday, February 13th at 1:00pm - Are you looking for that special card? Why not make it? Beth has card kits for every occasion.  Kits are payable by cash only, to the instructor. Prices vary from $1-$3, per card. If you are interested, please call the Center to register.
  • Crafty Creations – Friday, February 17th at 1:00pm – Lavender Milk Bath - All needed materials will be supplied. If you are interested please come to the Center to register. Cost: $5 per person.
  • Make It & Take It – Paint Class – Thursday, February 23rd at 9:30am or 1:00pm –Make a beautiful acrylic painting in one session! Sandra Poirier will take you step-by-step in creating your own masterpiece. Supplies are included. This class costs $17 per person. Payment is due at sign-up.


  • BINGO - Tuesdays at 1:00pm - Participants pay for cards used
  • Pictionary – Tuesday, January 31st at 11:00am – Can you guess what the drawing is before your opponent?
  • Cornhole Challenge – Tuesday, February 7th at 11:00am – Who’s up for a friendly challenge? The staff would like to challenge the members to a game of cornhole. We’re playing cornhole through the winter inside; come join the fun!
  • Not-So-Newlywed Game – Tuesday, February 14th at 11:00am – We are looking for married couples to play this game. We also need an audience. Everyone is welcome to join in on the fun. The game will run just like the original Newlywed Game. The couples will be asked questions for points. The couple with the most points will win a prize. If you are interested in either being an audience member or a competing couple, please call the Center to register. Please specify whether you would like to be part of the audience or a game contestant.
  • Mah-Jongg Lessons – Thursday, Feb. 16th & 23rd, & Mar. 2nd, 9th, 16th, & 23rd at 2:00pm – Have you been curious about Mah-Jongg? Have you been interested in learning how to play? Kim is leading a 6-week class that starts in February and runs through March. She will start with the basics and work up to the class being able to play by the end of the session. All needed materials will be provided for those registered for the session. This program is full - waiting list only.
  • Yahtzee! – Tuesday, February 21st at 10:30am – Can you roll the dice and get the highest score?
  • Whodunits – Monday, February 27th at 10:00am – Do you like to solve crimes? Participants will listen to a short story, from which you have to identify the criminal.
  • BUNCO – Monday, February 27th at 1:00pm – Bunco is a social, group dice game that requires little skill. Players attempt to roll specific numbers on the dice depending on the round. Roll a 3-of-a-kind during the match for a BUNCO! Prizes will be given at the end of the game for the winners. Cost $2 per person. Please come to the Center to register.
  • Trivia – Tuesday, February 28th at 10:30am – Test your knowledge on a variety of subjects.

February’s Specials

  • Pizza and a Comedy Magic Show – Wednesday, February 8th at 12:30pm: Pizza, 1:00pm: Entertainment – Gene Thompson will awe and delight you with his comedy magic show. He is known to be the life of the party. Let the magic unfold before your eyes. We will start the afternoon with pizza and continue with Gene’s show. Cost: $5 per person. This programis full - waiting list only.
  • Mardi Gras with José Paulo – Thursday, February 23rd at 6:00pm: Dessert, 6:30pm: Entertainment – José Paulo sings, dances, and plays the keyboard. He sings in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French. José is the perfect entertainer to have for a Mardi Gras party. Come join us for the celebration! We will start off the evening with a dessert and move onto music and dancing with José. Enjoy an evening of fun, music, and dancing. Cost: $5 per person. Please come to the Center to register.

Health & Wellness: Free unless otherwise stated

  • Veterans Group – Wednesday, February 1st at 2:30pm – This program is led by Sherri Vogt, Veterans Liaison, from Hartford HealthCare at Home. Sherri will be sharing information regarding veteran entitlement programs. The group will meet monthly. This program is open to Vernon Senior Center members only.
  • Foot Care – February 2nd & 16th - A specially trained nurse from Pedi-care will provide foot care, a general assessment of the feet and lower extremities, and provide guidance for better foot health. Cost: $30 (pay nurse directly, with check or cash). If you are interested, please call the Center for an appointment. Masks will be required for this clinic, due to the close proximity of individuals.
  • Diabetes Prevention Program – Wednesday, February 1st, 8th, & 15th at 10:00am. Please call the Center for more information.
  • Alzheimer’s Support Group – Wednesday, February 15th from 9:30am – 11:00am. This is a general caregiver support group sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association. All are welcome. Information and resources will be provided. If you are interested in this program, please call Karla at 860-983-9202 to register. All participants need to be registered.
  • Blood Pressure / Blood Sugar Screening – Tuesday, February 28th from 9:00am – 11:00am - Appointments are needed. Masks are required. Please call the Center to make an appointment.

Nutritional Lunch Program:

  • We would like to welcome Danielle, our new Kitchen Coordinator, to the Center. Our lunches are served on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 11:45am-12:15pm, and the cost is $5 each. Payment can be made with cash or check made out to the Vernon Senior Center. The lunches will be served & enjoyed in-house. Food cannot be taken out of the Center. Menu is subject to change without notice. Lunch reservations must be made no later than 10:00am the day prior by calling 860-870-3596.


  • Individual Tech Sessions – Thursdays from 11:00am-1:00pm – Call for an appointment.


  • Out to Lunch Bunch – Fiesta Mexicana, in Vernon, CT – Wednesday, February 15th arrive at restaurant at 12:30pm.
