What IS Gouache? Gouache is pronounced “gwash.” It has been used by artists for centuries and its unique properties of layering can produce the effects of both watercolor and acrylic paints. It was first used in medieval illuminated manuscripts and gained popularity among French and Italian painters in the 18th century. In the 20th century, gouache became a popular medium for commercial artists because it dries quickly and photographs well. It was a reliable medium for reproducing advertisements such as travel posters before digital design.
This water based painting medium is creamy and opaque in consistency to produce a lovely matte, velvety sur- face. Colors are archival and brilliant and it can be thinned with water to be more transparent like watercolor. It can be blended easily allowing for realistic or abstract design and composition.
Come explore painting with Gouache, subject and themes are open for your creative expression and exploration.
