Mayor Jason McCoy recognizes Local Efforts During National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month:
Jason L. McCoy, Mayor of Vernon, recently recognized the efforts of two local agencies, which assist local residents with recovery from alcohol and drug addiction.
At the September 12, 2009 Town Council meeting, Mayor McCoy issued a Mayoral Proclamation to Shawna Schnitzke, Director of Counseling for the Hockanum Valley Community Council, Inc. and Chris Luginbuhl, co-founder, of “Become a Part of the Solution” for their collaborative contributions as local treatment providers and for improving the health and well-being of residents.

The Town of Vernon donates fire gear to the Dominican Republic:

The Town of Vernon is pleased to announce the donation of fire gear to the City of Mao, Dominican Republic, on May 2, 2009 at the Hartford Fire Department Training Academy. Mayor Jason L. McCoy, and Vernon Fire Chief William Call joined together with the City of Hartford to present the equipment, consisting of protective coats and helmets formerly used by the Town of Vernon to Mayor Odalis Rodriguez and Fire Chief Manual Peralita of Mao, located in Valverde, Dominican Republic!
Civil War Program Sunday In Vernon: Connecticut Fighters At Gettysburg
Connecticut soldiers were immersed in smoke and blood on all three days of the battle at Gettysburg.
On July 1, 1863, the 17th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment faced screaming Georgian infantry on a knoll outside the southern Pennsylvania town. On July 2, the tiny 27th Connecticut lost about half its number in a field of wheat; and on July 3, the 14th Connecticut and 2nd Connecticut Light Battery took part in the great slaughter that ended Gen. George E. Pickett's charge and Gen. Robert E. Lee's hopes of a tide-turning Confederate victory. Read On

State Medical Team Responded To Ike
A day after Hurricane Ike ripped into Texas, a disaster response team from Connecticut arrived on Galveston Island to begin providing medical care to survivors and rescuers. "Right after the storm hit, we were here," said Michael Purcaro of Vernon, the team's administrative officer. Read On

Rehab Work On 8 Vernon Homes To Resume In June

Final work on eight vacant homes on Village and Orchard streets is scheduled to begin next week. The Vernon Non-Profit Housing Development Corp., which took title to several vacant and distressed properties a decade ago and has struggled to rehab the homes, has signed a contract with BRD Builders LLC of Hartford to complete the work. Stream Assessments to be Conducted in the Tankerhoosen Watershed

A visual assessment of the Tankerhoosen River and several of its tributary streams will take place June 3rd through June 5th between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Two field crews comprised of two to four individuals will walk sections of stream corridors of the Tankerhoosen River, as well as Clark Brook, Tucker Brook and Gages Brook. Rockville, the former city that's now a borough of Vernon, is perhaps best known as the boyhood home of the late and brilliant pop singer and composer Gene Pitney. Some local leaders want to capitalize on the connection to the late Rockville Rocket and bring a proposed Connecticut Music Hall of Fame to town. Roosevelt to get its bond funds
VERNON- At first, Vernon Mayor Jason McCoy didn’t believe it when he was told that Gov. Jodi Rell was on the phone for him. He quickly found out it wasn’t a joke. The governor was personally calling McCoy to tell him the town would be granted $1.2 million in grant-in-aid funds so it can make good on its end of the pre-closing agreement made with Loom City Lofts, LLC for demolition work and cleanup/remediation work at Roosevelt Mills. Reconstruction Grant

VERNON- Mayor Jason McCoy has announced that on Jan. 31, Gov. Jodi Rell awarded the town of Vernon $500,000 in Small Cities grant funding to be utilized in the reconstruction of 1,700 feet of High Street in the Rockville section of Vernon. Vernon was one of only 28 towns to receive a portion of the $13,245,000 in funding. The project funding will include extensive improvements to the drainage system, the replacement of the sidewalks and the repaving of the street.
